Crunches are the go-to exercise that most people use for abs.
But would you believe that every year, I take care of people who have managed to hurt their necks while doing crunches?!
If you're going to do crunches, pay attention to your neck, and keep it neutral and in line with your spine!
But the easier way to exercise your abs while keeping your neck and spine neutral is to sit for leverage, and then bend your knees and lift your legs.
If your abs are really weak, you will need to bend your knees a lot at first. As this gets easier and you want more of a challenge, extend your legs further out.
Here is a short video that shows a gentle progression of ab exercises using a chair. It starts with an exercise like the one we just mentioned, but starting with just one leg at a time, which is easy peasy (just how I like my exercise!).
And remember, strong abs help to support a strong back!
